Tummy Time for Reid

Week 3 with baby Reid

All is going well this week at our house. Mimi left on Sunday, Travis went back to work this week, and Shae went back to day care. It is just Reid and myself during the day at home; we are working on a schedule, which will take time to establish. So far I am finding that he sleeps the longest and deepest in the afternoons so I am trying to squeeze in work related stuff during this time. I plan to go back to work in a few weeks in the afternoons so hopefully that plan will work out!

Reid went and saw the Pediatrician last Thursday. He has gained back most of his weight which is great! As of last week; he weighed 9 pounds 15 ounces. He gained 9 ounces in 6 days which is more than what the doctor was hoping for so he is getting better at breastfeeding!

He also saw a physical therapist on Saturday afternoon which was a great visit. She found that he is really stiff on his left side (probably from the tight space in my belly; I still don't know how I had room in there for a 10 pound baby) so this is why his jaw is so tight on one side. We have been asked to make sure he does not lay his head to one side only; we need to monitor how he positions his head so he doesn't get a flat head on one side. So far so good. She also showed us a quick exercise to do before each feeding to help him relax his jaw-----it involves rolling his tongue with our finger. It has helped him in the last few days.

Things are going well at our house. We are getting a little more sleep as the days progress, I believe Reid is sleeping between 3-5 hours at a time at night. The trick is getting him to sleep early! He is wide eyed and interactive between 10 pm and 1 am so Travis and I have become night owls playing with him. Thank goodness for Netflix and the fact that there is always a quick turn around with renting movies this way! We have seen quite a few movies the last few weeks!

Oh I'm writing this blog on my new computer! Travis surprised me with an early birthday present and got me a really nice laptop. This way I can work on the computer for work in any part of the house while I am feeding or entertaining Reid. It is very nice to have!

Well Reid is sleeping so I should take advantage of this quiet time to rest myself!!

More updates to come later on.

We have survived our first week!

Whew! Our first week with Reid has come and gone; we are on to another week with our bundle of joy!! Many sleepless nights and lots of naps during the day has become our schedule. Payton and Shae are wondering if they have parents these days or zombies in place of us. I should say it's more me that is like a zombie cranky monster to them, but they are surviving and somewhat understanding that Mom and Dad are not getting a lot of sleep. Payton told me this morning (after my cranky spell with them tearing the house apart when I was feeding the baby) that "maybe you should have went to bed earlier Mom!"

Reid had his first follow up appt with his Pediatrician on Friday. When we left the hospital he was 9 pounds 9 ounces---at his appt he was down to 9 pounds 6 ounces so the doctor was a bit concerned that his weighed dipped down a bit instead of going up. She suggested we see a lactation specialist because we are having breast feeding issues and that we come back next week to have him weighed. We went to a lactation specialist later that day who was an incredible help to me. I have never gone in to see one with the other kids (I wish I did with Payton!)---to spare you all details, we are doing better with breast feeding as the weekend progresses. The lactation specialist wants us to take Reid in to a Physical Therapist (she called the Pediatrician who agrees) to teach us how to help Reid open his mouth more-----it sounds so strange to us to take a less than 2 week old baby to a PT to help him relax his jaw, but apparently they have a way to help babies who clamp down and have a tight jaw relax to be able to eat properly. Weird but worth a shot.

Here are some more pictures of how we are doing. Shae is finally holding Reid. He had to wait on his own terms to open up to the idea. He is struggling to establish "normalcy" since Reid came home. We are doing our best to help him along the way----I have no idea how it feels to be the middle child, but I can tell he already knows he is smack dab in the middle of the other two. I'm sure anyone who is a middle child can sympathize with him!

Well, I'm off to hang with Travis and wide eyed baby. This is the time we are all awake entertaining each other for hours on end!!

We love our new "soothing center!" Here is Reid all bundled up enjoying his comfy new pod. It has been a life saver! He actually slept a 4 hour stretch early this morning! WOW!!!
